Sorry about the silly title. I was trying to figure out how to combine two seemingly unconnected topics. The first is that I have received a 2 month rejection from Glimmer Train for my story “Enduring at the Edge of the Storm.” I never really expected to break into that market, but I figured it was worth a shot.
Anyway, on to happier matters. It is day 2 of my sourdough experiment. After taking care of the…ahem…essentials once I woke up this morning, my first bit of business was to check on and feed my sour dough starters.
I brought them upstairs and removed the cheese cloth.
The first one (all white flour) had a few tiny bubbles on the surface as well as some dark liquid forming around the edges. I sniffed the concoction to make sure it hadn’t gone bad, but it still smelled like plain old dough. So I mixed the starter, disposed of half of it, and then fed it half a cup of water and half a cup of flour.
The second starter (mostly white flour with some wheat mixed in) didn’t have the dark liquid forming, but it did have a bunch of tiny bubbles. I’m not positive, but I think I might have caught those wild yeast I was hoping for. Anyway, I fed the second starter in the same manner as the first, and placed them both back above the mantle. Again, I wanted to take photos, but I partly forgot and partly don’t want to mess with my brother’s camera when he’s not around.
I promise to start taking photos, and I will definitely take pictures once I start the actually bread.
On that note, I think I will also try to catalogue my family’s Feast of the Seven Fishes dinner this year. For those who don’t know, this is a Christmas Eve celebration where Italians and Catholics eat only fish the day before Christmas.
