Now what kind of horror writer would I be if I didn’t acknowledge Friday the 13th? For me, this day has little to do with superstition and bad luck. In fact, I tend to celebrate it like a holiday. While not as prevalent on my calendar as Halloween, I still like to have horror movie marathons complete with bloody treats (not real blood, unless I get careless with my knife).
Tonight I plan to screen Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Return of the Killer Tomatoes, and probably some oldies from my 50 horror movie pack.
I know. I’m supposed to watch Friday the 13th. Well, you know what I say to that? Bore-ing! Oh that’s right. you heard me correctly.
Anyway. I guess I have some accumulated news, so a-way we go!
A few days ago I received a 155-day rejection from Aberrant Dreams. I was a little disappointed that it was a form letter, especially since I had made the short list, but I guess thems the breaks.
I’ve added some minor wordage to the novel, but seem to have stalled out the past couple days. I plan to make up for that.
It’s become apparent that I planted my crops a bit too closely. The tomato plants especially have grown together and become one huge jungle of greenery. Despite my lack of knowledge, they seem to be fairing quite well, and all three varieties (Roma, Early Girl, and Sunburst Cherry) have started to fruit. I am also seeing a handful of cucumbers begin to grow, and the Hot Portugal Peppers continue to thrive.
I have also found two types of blueberries growing all around my garden. We have a bunch of low lying blueberries as well as High growing bush types. They have become ripe over the past week or two. I think i might make pie.

Oh heck. While these pictures are loading, I’ll tell you about what is coming in the mail today, and the reason I was thinking of making a fresh blueberry pie.
Today, I expect to receive my brand new ice cream maker.
It’s a Cuisinart that has a freezer bowl so you don’t have to mess with rock salt and ice. I’m really looking forward to making a few batches. I’ll post some pictures in between gorging.
And here’s a question for you all. Would you use raw eggs to make ice cream?
The Ben And Jerry’s recipes I have seen call for raw egg. I’ve done some research on the subject and have come to the conclusion that it is fairly safe, salmonella or not. However, there are recipes that call for you to cook the egg mixture, so I was just curious how you all felt about it.

Glad to see you didn’t follow the herd and lined up the “Friday” movies.
I never worry about raw eggs. I just eat (swallow) them all the time before I discovered protein powder. It seems a funny thing to put in ice cream though. When I was just a young pup, I was a charge-hand in an ice cream factory and none of our recipes contained eggs.
I clicked on the pictures, by the way (great pics) and I see what you mean by humungo-vision.
You would think they would have some kind of Friday the 13th marathon playing on TV, but no. One channel was showing The Exorcist and one had Halloween, but no Friday the 13th.
My mom makes this great banana blueberry pie, but she uses canned blueberry pie filling, not fresh. But it still tastes great.
We have the old fashion ice cream maker where you have to use rock salt and ice. It always comes out so cold that you can barely feel your tongue much less be able to taste the ice cream.
I would love to have a slushi maker. I saw one at Walmart one day.
Yes, but how’s the sourdough starter doing?? That’s a pretty Friday the 13th-appropriate thing, right? This blob that’s alive in your fridge, ready to take over the whole house…
I have no experience in making ice creams, but I am dying to see your work in the refrigerator.

I love your garden, Tony. Envy is the word that best describes my feelings there. Mine is dying from the extreme heat here in Utah.

Thanks. Yeah, I ended up cooking a custard for the ice cream base. You wouldn’t happen to have any of your old ice cream recipes, would you?
That pie sounds really good. The ice cream maker I bought can also make sorbets, slushies, gelato, and so on.
Thanks. I just did some major trimming of the garden today. It was hard to cut back all those branches, but i guess it will make the crop that much better.
Sorry to hear about your garden. I had a couple scares this year too, but now my major concern is overgrowth.

Yes, it is a scary sort of thing. unfortunately, I’ve been too busy to play with my sourdough much more than a few pancakes here and there. It’s still alive and well (though I had a scare at one point).
Maybe I’ll do something with it this weekend.

Sigh, we had a cancer scare with my baby and the last few months have been dreadful but he was just given a clean bill of health (PHEW!!) so I have more time for computer related activities now. I SO WANT an ice cream maker, I’m interested to know how it works for you. I got a breadmaker recently to make easy sandwich loaves (not sourdough) and I love it. You dump the ingredients and go!

We had a bread maker at one point, but it didn’t work right (that was years ago). I am digging this ice cream maker though. I’ll probably post about it soon.
